The South Australian Attorney-General’s Department said on Thursday night that a 17-year-old boy’s father identified his son by his last name, Cootes, when questioned by police.
The father told police Cootes had threatened to kill him during an altercation in the Adelaide suburb of Coonabarabran.
He said his son had told him: “I’m going to kill the police if I don’t get what’s coming to me.”
After being held for some time, the teen was taken to hospital by paramedics, where he died.
The Attorney-General’s Department said police were treating the boy’s death as “suspicious”.
